None of this is to say Forspoken cannot find success, and it certainly is not the case that the game isn't worth trying. By the time it launches, it will have been two-and-a-half years since "Project Athia" was announced, and the sheer number of trailers and delays, while obviously necessary for Forspoken's development, have drawn out the release schedule in a way that (at the very least) isn't doing the game any favors. Square Enix says Forspoken reception was challenging, sales lacklustre. Ultimately, Forspoken is a fun game with an intriguing story, but its success may be impeded by its genre, tone, and (sadly) external factors. It brings to mind Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising, an entertaining (though derivative) open-world game that turned some gamers off with its humor. This is especially true of her constant banter with the snarky sentiment bracelet Cuff, with some of their commentary being more annoying or cringeworthy than amusing. Thrust into the dangerous land of Athia, the young hero must learn to harness magical abilities to survive. Her energy and sometimes irreverent approach to her situation can be refreshing for those used to more serious or stoic heroes like Geralt of Rivia, Aloy, or Eivor, but it can also wear out its welcome. This seemingly ordinary woman is the lead character in Forspoken - a brand new adventure from the talented team at Luminous Productions.
As an average young New Yorker transported to a magical world, Frey is obviously a far cry from the typical open-world game protagonist. Unfortunately, those elements that make Forspoken stand out may be the same things that turn some gamers off.
