The continent we're settling on is almost completely over-run with Goblins and Necromancer Towers. I've rolled up a rather small world (to keep FPS high) that has only one Dwarven Civ remaining in it. Peafowl produce bones and leather as well as eggs (not all poulty do this), and are the longest lived of all the poultry.

For poultry I usually buy blue peafowl instead of chickens, turkeys or ducks. They provide wool in addition to the usual bones, meat, leather and milk. They are the cheapest (and easiest to feed) of all the shearable animals, requiring only about 1/5th the pasturage of a cow. Pigs are prime candidates: like cats and dogs they don't require pasturage (so you can keep them in a bare stone chamber), the females can be milked, and in total they can supply meat, meat byproducts (intestines, spleen, sweetbread, etc), fat for tallow, hides for leather, milk and cheese. So starting with a variety of farm animals would be helpful. "had to wear old clothes" can be one of the nastiest negative thoughts, especially for certain personality types. If we can produce everything that cloth and leather industries require, we can keep our dwarves clothed and happy. Underground herds of animals, so we can supply ourselves with bones, meat, fat (for soap) and leather. Underground tree farms, so we don't need to send lumberjacks up to the surface. Sealed underground greenhouses, so we don't need to use the surface for growing crops. I would like to give the fort as much autarky as possible, though. perhaps using an underground trade depot with extensive positional defenses inboard of it. The problem with trade is that it presupposes that you will maintain a connection to the outside world. Should we abandon the surface and seal ourselves away from the world as soon as possible?ĥ) What other pre-game considerations require discussion?

or just an Axe?Ĥ) Since we will be relying entirely on new births, and since Dwarves only give birth if they are married (and will only marry ONCE), even a single death can cripple our fort. Armor and weapons? Or metal ores to manufacture armor and weapons? Or just a pick to mine metal ores? Wood?. And other skills are perfectly trainable but a high starting skill will offer major benefits: Military skills, Mechanic, Grower and Brewer, for example.ģ) What starting equipment will we need to bring? An anvil, of course. Some other skills are extremely useful but hard or impossible to train: Medical skills, for instance. If there's anyone out there that knows a lot more about water mechanics/physics than me, please share your thoughts! I definitely feel like this is feasible but would take a lot of trial-and-error.I'm starting up the "Last Dwarves in the World" fort.įirst, we should do a bit of brainstorming.ġ) Who wants to sign up for a Dwarf? Me, of course, but who else? What professions?Ģ) What starting skills are essential? Most skills can be trained fairly quickly: Carpentry, Mining and Masonry, for example. XX XX H = Hole, falling down several z-levels If the entry for the water you use is 7/7, using a 3x1 hole instead of a 1x1 hole will never cause spillage but only if the entry for the river is 1x1. Creatures that somehow infiltrate my plumbing system won't be able to pass through the fortification since, not only are they not 7/7 submerged, but they're falling down z-levels at a rapid pace until they hit the bottom.

at least, until it reaches a hole to fall through.ĭwarfs cannot pass through the fortification, since they are not submerged in 7/7 water. In theory, having multiple branching tunnels will cause water rushing in to spread out, never reaching more than 3/7. Testing has shown that, in order for water to not 'spill' into the bedrooms, the power of the water has to be relatively low (2/7 or so). Just as mist can travel through fortifications, so can water. XBFWFBX F = Fortification W = Waterfall falling down another z level. In theory, the channel lines would have to look intricate and arcane in order to actually reach any conceivable spot in the fort. Simply put, I want to channel water in such a way that there's a waterfall in every bedroom, every meeting hall, every corner of the fortress, all of which will generate mist. I wish to embark on a megaproject that, for whatever reason, is not listed on the wiki (making me think no one else has thought this up before).
